01 — Why
Exactly what I need
On shared hosting you get what the host gives you. With my own VPS I set up exactly what I need: which services run, how they’re reached and how they’re deployed.
02 — Setup
Plesk and Docker side by side
Plesk manages domains and certificates. Docker containers run alongside it, managed through Portainer. A wildcard DNS record points subdomains at the server, and Plesk’s nginx proxies them to the right container port.
Caddy used to handle the reverse proxy, but the DNS provider’s limit of five subdomains got in the way. The wildcard via Plesk solves that and removes a layer.
03 — Running
What runs on it
- This site, as a static build in an nginx container
- A custom League of Legends tracker
- A sandbox site for HTML, CSS and JavaScript experiments
- A MySQL and phpMyAdmin stack
